Why AI answers matter for your brand, and how to track them

When a buyer asks an AI assistant "what is the best tool for X?" the answer will be a list of tools. The AI will not provide an opinion on which tool is best, it will simply list the tools. Names a few brands and omits the rest. If yours isn't one of them you... They're not on the shortlist and nothing in your analytics will tell you. Citeably shows you which answers name you, which name a competitor instead, and which web pages those answers are based on.

Why AI answers matter for brands

Buying research has moved into chat. ChatGPT alone has more than 900 million weekly users, and G2's 2026 AI search report found that 82% of buyers let an AI recommend the vendor, and 33% bought what the AI named.

Three things make this different from search:

  • An answer is a shortlist, not a list of links. A search results page displays ten options. An AI answer usually gives three or four choices. The buyer often stops at that point.

  • Ranking in search does not mean being named. A company can rank high on Google. Still not appear in the answers. The two are related,. They are not identical.

  • Answers are built from peoples pages. Assistants gather information from reviews, forums, comparison sites and articles. What those pages say about you influences what the assistant says about you.

Unlike search there is no ranking report for it. You cannot see what an assistant tells a buyer unless you ask it yourself question by question, model by model week, after week. That is what Citeably does.

How to use Citeably

1. Add your domain

Enter your website and a brief description of the products you sell. Citeably identifies the topics relevant to your audience and the prompts that buyers would actually use. You don’t need to create prompts to start.

2. Edit anything

Every topic and prompt are fully editable by you. Adjust a prompt to your customer’s voice, remove the parts that don’t fit, and include your questions from sales calls.

Generated prompts grouped by topic, each one editable

3. Run the check

Each prompt will be sent to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity’s models simultaneously via their API with live web search enabled. All three matter as just because one model mentions you doesn’t necessarily mean other models do as well.

4. Read the gap

For each prompt you’ll see for each model, whether you were mentioned, what position you had and who else was mentioned instead of you. Full analysis is one click away.

Per-model results for one prompt: named on two models, missing on Gemini, where a competitor took the spot

What the dashboard shows

These four numbers represent every check in the overview:

  • Visibility: the percentage of checks with a mention of your brand.
  • Share of mentions: the frequency of mentions of you as opposed to your competitors, and their ranking.
  • Mentions on owned citations: the percentage of mentions that refer to your own content, and what types of websites they come from.
  • Coverage by topic: the percentage of your topics mentioning you, and the percentage not doing it.

Following, What changed includes a list of the topics that have changed since the previous run, and Top gaps is the list of the topics with competitors mentioned but not you.

What changed and Top gaps: topics that lost ground, and where competitors win

Open any prompt to read the exact answer, with every brand marked in the order it appears.

One prompt opened: the question, the models that answered, and the brands they named in order

Turning gaps into fixes

Gaps are the beginning, not the end. On any topics in which you are incomplete:

  1. Read through the answers that exclude you. It tells you how the assistant perceives the requirements of the buyer and what competitor suits those requirements the most.
  2. Read through the sources it references. When an answer is compiled from a comparison article or a review website where you are not mentioned, this page is the starting point.
  3. Create pages that will answer the questions. Pages that directly tell about whom you serve, what you cost and how you compare are useful because they provide an assistant with information to repeat.
  4. Review and compare. Every check is stored, which allows seeing exactly when an update helped you to become part of the answer, on which model and for which topic.
